I'm not familiar with the Palm or the client it uses, so all I can really tell you is the settings you need.

Incoming mail server: pop-server.nycap.rr.com
outgoing mail server: smtp-server.nycap.rr.com

for username/login, use your whole email address: xxxxx@nycap.rr.com
and whatever password goes with it.

They did something a few weeks ago that made the servers more picky about full server name and the login email, that might be affecting you.

The errors your palm client is giving you are not familiar to me at all. They look more like local application errors than mail server errors.

Other possibilities include a malformed email (like a bad spam message) could be blocking the mail parsing.
Or sometimes a very large email (with large attachments) can also cause mail clients to choke.

You could log into the RR webmail to see if there are any problem messages in your inbox.

My Palm Centro has VersaMail as an email client.  It's been configured and successfully receiving my rr email for 18 months, except for the last few weeks.  Auto sync w/rr fails.  Here's the log from my versamail email client:

Error parsing server response.  Please re-sync .
Initialization
Connection establishment
User authorization
Process server changes
Disconnected

Error 05DF:1879:1358
---------------------

My connection tests fine everytime.  And, it looks like from the log that the problem occurs after authorization.

Any help?

-thanks ,
Steve

Does Roadrunner support IMAP interfaces with client email apps. E.g. Outlook?

My desktop takes over 5 minutes to boot up. I do not have many programs running in the background. The only icons in the taskbar are the CA Security Suite, volume speaker, AdAware, and the "Safely Remove Hardware" which I assume is for the USB adapter for my Ethernet cable. The only items checked in the msconfig startup menu are: cctray, QOELoader, CAVRID, cafw, capfasem, and a box on a blank line.

I've also noticed that since getting a new cable modem installed a few weeks ago, my Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer), the folder and file manipulation program, is very slow to respond. It takes an agonizingly long time to open, rename, move or delete folders and files. Does the new modem have anything to do with this problem, or is it just a coincidence, and what can I do to get the Windows Explorer folder back up to speed? I've already tried running a disk scan, emptying temp files, virus and malware scans and even a system restore. Any suggestions appreciated. Assume I'm not too computer savvy. Thanks.

The modem cannot affect how your computer runs.
You note in your other post that you are using USB ethernet adapter. My suspicion is that the computer has a problem with the USB drivers that is causing some difficulty, even thought the USB connection is working. And if you do have an ethernet adapter that is also not working, I further suspect driver issues.
But the modem itself does not do anything to your computer. As i noted in my other response, we are happy to come check out your modem, but we can't do computer repair.

Why won't my desktop computer recognize my internet connection through the Ethernet cable alone? I have to connect to the tower using a USB adapter.

The Ethernet adapters on all our modems are enabled by default, so using cat5 should work.

If your computer does not recognize the Ethernet, the most likely problem is with the network adapter in the tower.
You would have to test the port against a working hub or router to verify it works.

It is possible that the port on the modem could have a problem, but that usually happens from a power surge or something, and generally would affect the whole modem not just the ethernet.

You are welcome to call for a Trouble call to have us come out and check the modem. Trouble calls are free
But if the modem is okay, you will have to have the computer checked out. We do not do computer repair.

I am getting really sick of the cable shutting itself down 3 times in the past week on Sunday nights. If they are having a reboot of their system, why not during the middle of the night

Thank you for the reply Elminst.  My pings and traceroutes have gone back to normal thankfully.  Back to 20 ping bliss.

I don't know what the issue may have been yesterday.

The devices on hops 2 and 3 are literally in the same room, connected by a gigabit link. That link never goes over 30% capacity, even at peak times.
I can see nothing on either device's logs that would explain the ping times you were seeing.

Also, if you speak to the Tier3 support at the local office, I can assure you they understand how the internet works. And, that is your best route of having someone investigate quickly.
